When our mental health is a mess, or just completely nonexistent, we have the tendency to act out. Whether it’s a brief period of stress or it’s something much more prolonged like grief or an existential crisis, we can be buried underneath emotional pain and discomfort.
For anyone who is in POG (Prison of Gloom) we may drink, overeat, or experiment with drugs as a way of being released from such a horrific place. And to others, attempting this prison break may look quite foolish.
In this GQ article, Justin Bieber admits:
“…in this industry, you’ve got people that unfortunately prey on people’s insecurities and use that to their benefit. And so when that happens, obviously that makes you angry. And then you’re this young angry person who had these big dreams, and then the world just jades you and makes you into this person that you don’t want to be. And then you wake up one day and your relationships are fucked up and you’re unhappy and you have all this success in the world, but you’re just like: Well, what is this worth if I’m still feeling empty inside?”
To close out Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s also consider the effect that we have on each other as humans…
When we’re witnessing someone figuring out how to be free of POG, maybe we can’t physically or personally assist in their escape, but what we can do is not judge them. Not criticize their behavior. Not troll them.
And that means for anyone; celebrities, family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even strangers.
Err’ing is double-sided; it’s the person who’s suffering and not making healthy choices, and it’s also those who are vilifying while watching it happen.
“It’s only in hindsight that we gain insight.” When we reflect on improving how we interact in society and in our relationships, we have to find forgiveness for what we were not aware of before.
Just notice what superficial opinions have formed when observing certain people’s behaviors. Whether it’s the random person who’s high on drugs or the relative at holiday gatherings who over-indulges; send them hope that they find healing and ultimately freedom from whatever is torturing them…
